    We have big news from our SuperPawn stores in Nevada and Arizona – today we launched our new Facebook page, Twitter account and YouTube channel!



    SuperPawn has been part of the Cash America family since 2004, operates 55 locations primarily in Nevada and Arizona and is one of the premiere pawnshop chains in the western United States. We are very involved in community service, and regularly support literacy programs, local schools and other charitable organizations.

    To celebrate our exciting social media launches, we are hosting a SuperPawn Challenge contest on Facebook starting today.


    Snap a photo of yourself with any one item in our SuperPawn stores and you could win it. Three grand prize contest winners will win his or her wish list item, or a like item (up to $3,000 in value).

  • Happy New Year!

    As we begin a New Year, we’re all making resolutions, but year after year, sometimes we break them and fall right back into our old habits. Whether you’re aiming to have more fun in 2012 or save more money, we’ve got some good tips for achieving your New Year’s resolutions this year.


    1.    Set a reasonable goal. If you want to lose weight, for instance, don’t expect to lose 20 pounds in one month! Aim for an achievable amount, like 3 or 4 pounds.

    2.    Challenge yourself. If you really want to change things around this year, go for the gold! Learn new skills or hone in on improving your existing talents.
    3.    Don’t be afraid. Too often we think we can’t accomplish goals because they seem unattainable. Use small steps to reach larger, long term goals.
    4.    Hold yourself accountable. Don’t forget about your resolution once February rolls around. Log weekly or monthly progress and record exactly what you did  or didn’t accomplish so you’re sure to reach the goal.
    5.    Reward yourself! If a month or two passes and you have met your goals, do something nice for yourself.

  • Happy Holidays!

    As the holiday season approaches, we get to spend more time with our family and friends and, of course, make New Year’s resolutions. But, we should also reflect on the successes that we achieved throughout the year. That’s where our customers and our coworkers come into play.



    Happy Holidays!
    Cash America had another banner year. We increased our store count in the United States and Mexico, we expanded our product offerings, including auto equity and installment loans, to multiple states, and we overcame several legislative challenges.

    We raised more money for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)than ever before in our company’s history. We implemented a new point-of-service system in all Texas shops that will be rolled out to all of our U.S. locations next year. And we were named a Top Place to Work by several well-known publications in major markets.


    But none of that would have been possible without the continued support of the hundreds of thousands of customers who place their trust in us every day, or the more than 6,000 talented professionals who make up the face of Cash America.

    Together, we are improving lives and making a difference in the communities where we live and work.

  • The History of Pawn

    Since Tuesday is National Pawnbrokers Day, it has prompted me to reflect on the history of our business. Pawn has been around for several thousand years.  The first businesses existed in China about 3,000 years ago where pawn shops were heavily regulated by imperial or other authorities.


    Pawnbroking can be found in the written history of Greek and Roman civilizations. Monarchs raised money for armies and other endeavors by pawning their valuables, and it is rumored that Queen Isabella pawned her crown jewels to finance Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the new world.


    Throughout the ages, three gold balls have been the universal symbol for pawnbrokers.  The symbol was originally part of the coat of arms of the Italian Medici family - a family of bankers and lenders with considerable wealth and fame in the 15th century. The symbol became so famous that other lenders adopted a similar coast of arms in hopes of sharing in the Medici’s financial success. As pawnbrokers began to open branches abroad, the symbol spread to the European West and eventually to America where pawnbrokers still display the symbol today.

    The pawn industry has changed throughout the years. As Cash America’s founder, I began our company with the vision of a clean, well-lit, friendly, customer-oriented place for hard-working consumers to get short-term loans. Until then, the perception of pawnshops wasn’t always the greatest, but I wanted to change that. We have grown since opening our first shop in 1984 and now offer more than just pawn loans. Our services include consumer loans, installment loans, layaway, auto equity loans and tax filing services, just to name a few.


    We’ve enjoyed watching the pawn industry grow and change and look forward to helping our customers meet financial needs for years to come.

  • Shoppers with "Sole"

    In 11 years, Cash America has donated more than $1.6 million to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). But we didn’t do it alone.



    Since 2000, the success of our JDRF fundraising campaign has depended on Cash America’s finest…our customers. One sneaker at a time, one dollar at a time, customers from around the country donate to help JDRF’s mission of finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.


    “When the idea first came about to sell paper sneakers in our shops, people were hesitant,” said Cash America CFO Tom Bessant who is a parent of a type 1 diabetic. “They feared that the general perception of our customers might imply that they might not have many opportunities to be charitable and would impact our ability to raise money. Boy, were they wrong.”


    Our customers are sincere and it shows in the most recent JDRF campaign—that wrapped on October 22—which raised more than $420,000.



    For the six-week long campaign, colorful paper sneakers lined the walls of our shops demonstrating the kindness our customers have for their communities. After all, the donations collected are returned back to their community through the local JDRF chapter.


    So, we thank you, our shoppers with “sole”, for the opportunity to contribute to the communities in which we live and work. You continue to do us—and many others—proud.

  • The Future is Now

    When it comes to the in-store experience, Cash America’s pawnshops have always been a step ahead of the competition.

    And well, we’re at it again! We’ve developed a new store concept that will dramatically change the way we do business. If you thought our shops were welcoming places to do business before, take a look at what we call our “store of the future.”

    Our Store Development Team has spent the past two years studying and researching what consumers like about the places they shop – from colors and décor to store layout, lighting and convenience. As part of this process, we turned a vacant building on the southwest side of Fort Worth, Texas into a world-class pawnshop.


    We began with aesthetic appeal both inside and out. The new design improves traffic flow, allows customers to shop while they wait, improves efficiency and gives customers more privacy when making financial transactions.

    Features:
    •    More windows on the front so people can see the merchandise inside the store from the street.
    •    The façade has more brick features, a change from the usual cinder-block-box look.
    •    A layout that resembles small shops within a mall. Each “department” has its own special lighting and the jewelry “department” has hardwood-style laminate flooring.
    •    Multiple loan counters provide more privacy for transactions, and instead of waiting in line, each customer can take a number, then shop until it’s his/her turn to be served at the counter.

    •    A conveyor system resembling that of a dry cleaner allows merchandise to be retrieved from the back room more efficiently.
    •    A lift system installed on the ceiling of the back room stores bicycles and weed eaters overhead to save space. Each lift can be lowered to access the item needed.

    The new store opens in Fort Worth on October 31 at 3740 Alta Mesa Blvd. It’s a pilot project, and all the new systems will be tested and analyzed before they are rolled out to other stores.

  • Green Efforts: Paper or Plastic?

    The first thing I noticed when I went to work for Cash America was that the employees all looked so happy. The second thing I noticed was the company’s efforts to be environmentally friendly.



    More companies are realizing that it’s in style to be green, but Cash America has been leading the way for years with measures at the corporate offices and in the field.

    Cash America is constantly working to reduce waste and help our environment, all while improving process efficiency for our coworkers. We are dedicated to conducting business the green way and, over the years, have implemented several programs to support this effort, including a paperless invoice and billing system, and a paperless payroll program.
     

    Our Construction Team has been actively implementing ways to save on fossil fuels with recent remodels and construction. Simple things like the motion switches placed in stockrooms, break rooms and restrooms use energy only when those areas are occupied. Higher seer HVAC (heating/air conditioning) systems lower shops’ energy bills and require less maintenance. Plus, our ceiling tiles are made from recycled newspaper, slat wall from recycled grocery bags, and plywood from reclaimed lumber cuttings.

    Our corporate facilities are pulling their weight, too. In 2005, we began our recycling program that allows us to recycle about 21 tons of paper annually. And more recently, coworkers at our corporate office can recycle cans and bottles in every kitchen on every floor.


    These efforts earned the Cash America building in Fort Worth, Texas, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s prestigious ENERGY STAR8.16.5 rating. This rating means that our building achieved superior energy performance and joined the top 25 percent of facilities in the nation for energy efficiency.

    But our recycling efforts don’t end there. In our pawn shops the merchandise is recycled as well. The merchandise we sell has been refurbished and is sold to the public. Video games and playing devices are used as well as TVs, jewelry and other electronics. Because it’s used we offer great prices on merchandise.   • Protecting Your Personal Property

    Five years ago I arrived home from work, but it was not the same home I remembered leaving that morning.  The outside looked familiar, however, the inside looked like a bad scene from a movie—my  house completely ransacked, my valuables stolen and my privacy violated. I was the victim of a burglary.


     

    When police arrived, I was still in shock. And although I cooperated fully, I wasn’t able to help them as much as I wanted. Quite simply, I wasn’t prepared. I had no record of what was taken—no serial numbers, model numbers or detailed descriptions. Detectives called me daily and worked my case as much as they could, but they weren’t able to recover any of my things.

     

    According to police across the country, this scenario plays out often for victims of property crime. Last year, the FBI reported there were an estimated 9,082,887 property crimes nationwide.

    At Cash America, we work closely with law enforcement and our customers to help foster safe communities. One tool we developed would’ve greatly assisted me years ago—Operation I.D., a property identification kit to help consumers catalog their personal belongings.

     

    Operation I.D. kits are available in many of our shops. Along with tips and advice on how to work with police, the kits include a place for consumers to write down descriptions, serial numbers, model numbers, dates of purchase and purchase price.


    There’s even a pocket to store receipts and pictures, which is helpful when filing insurance claims as well.

  • Online Tool Helps Solve Property Crimes

    Gone are the days when many police department’s pawn detail would have to go by shops and collect paper pawn slips.

     Even though less than 1 percent of our merchandise is ever suspected of being misappropriated, Cash America works closely with local, state and federal law enforcement to prevent crime. And more recently, we have technology to help.


     

    We have been utilizing LEADSOnline.com, a Web-based database accessible by law enforcement officials that allows them to search our items online to see if there is a match to a property crime and facilitates the recovery of missing personal property.

     

    Each and every day all of our pawnshops transmit data to LeadsOnline.com regarding every item purchased or pawned. In 2010, our shops received 11.5 million items.


     

    A detailed description of the item is provided and any unique identifying marks, such as a ring inscription, or a serial number on electronics, are recorded. The customer’s name and address are also listed.

     

    Police can search the site for specific items to see if anything matching the description appears in the database, and find the person who pawned or sold it. While we work closely with law enforcement to report items we accept, it is rare that any of those items are reported stolen. 


    Our employees are highly trained to identify stolen merchandise and do not knowingly accept it in our stores.

  • 9/11 - A Decade Later


    This year marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11, a date that is permanently etched in the memories of Americans for the terrorist attacks on our nation. You probably remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when news of the attacks hit the airways. Chances are you remember every emotion you felt and you shared in the grief of those who lost loved ones.

     

    Since 2001, many changes have occurred in our nation—the process to board an airplane, restrictions on financial transactions with other countries, even security requirements to enter many workplaces. But the biggest change was actually a positive one—a renewed sense of national pride.

     


    9/11 sparked a shared passion among the hundreds of millions of residents across our nation. People proudly displayed the American flag on their houses and cars. Neighbors helped neighbors, both near and far. And members of our military once again became heroes and began receiving the respect they deserve.

  • Got A Car? Get The Cash!

     

    Auto Equity Loans for Fast Cash

    Need some extra cash, but need more money than a payday advance provides? We have a new loan product that could help. Cash America offers a wide variety of finance options to help our customers meet their cash needs.

     

    In several states, Cash America is now offering auto equity loans to customers at our Payday Advance locations and pawn shops. If you own your car, you may qualify.

     

    The maximum payday advance in Texas is $1,500, and Cash America auto equity loans pick up where payday leaves off, with a minimum loan of $1,500 and a lower interest rate and a longer pay-off term.

     

    The Auto Equity loan works differently and is less expensive than a common car title loan. Cash America customers can get up to $25,000 for an auto equity loan. That’s compared to $10,000 offered by other competitors.

     


    And the loan can be paid off over 42 months with no penalty for early payment. Most companies require a single re-payment in 30 days and may penalize those who payoff early.

     

    “This loan product allows our customers to get credit at a lower cost,” said Dennis Weese, president of Retail Services. “When you pay it off, it gets positively reported to the credit bureau, so it gives our customers a chance to build credit.”

     

    The process is simple. When a customer comes to a store to get an auto equity loan, they speak to an auto equity customer service representative by phone. The representative guides the customer through all of the necessary steps to complete the loan process. 


    Banks are tightening credit requirements in this economy. So when you need cash fast, come to Cash America and get the money you need quickly and easily.

     

    Auto equity loans are currently available in Texas, California, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Illinois and Utah.

  • Celebrating Labor Day

    This weekend is Labor Day—a time for barbecues, neighborhood get-togethers and family bonding. But Labor Day is more than just a three-day weekend. It’s a time to pay tribute to our workforce.

     

    According to the history books, the founder of the Labor Day holiday remains a topic of debate. Was it Peter McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, and cofounder of the American Federation of Labor? Or was it Matthew Maguire, a machinist and member of the International Association of Machinists who originally proposed the holiday? Whomever we have to thank, the Labor Day holiday has served as a tradition for more than 100 years, honoring hard-working Americans and commemorating the contributions they make to the success of our country.

  • We Won't Needle You, But She Might

     


    Going back to school generally brings about the same emotions every August: anticipation, excitement and feeling hopeful for the future. However, back-to-school for some students can bring worry or uncertainty from facing mounting tuition, student loans, cost of books and how to handle it all. This was the predicament Shelly Baker found herself in before she began to use the pawn loan services at Cash America in 2006. With a 100 percent redemption rate, Shelly used the loan services to finance her school-related expenses, including tuition, books, uniforms, lab fees and certification tests.

     


    Through hard work, perseverance and the occasional stop at Cash America Pawn, Shelly Baker graduated on November 10, 2009, from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. The services offered by Cash America Pawn helped Shelly finance her dream of becoming a Phlebotomy Technician. Upon receiving her certificate, Shelly presented the staff at Cash America with a copy of that certificate along with a note.

     

    The note read:

    To My Cash America Crew,

    Thank you for all your kindness, generosity and much gratitude for helping me obtain this certification. As much as I am deeply grateful, I am happy someone cares about my education, too. On behalf of my family and me, THANK YOU! Thank you for your loyalty, support and much success to you all.
