  • SuperPawn Makes Reading Super Fun

    By Ken, Market Manager

It’s officially Reading Is Fun Week, which makes us reflect on all the great events SuperPawn hosts year-round to support and encourage reading.

    Sizzling Summer of Reading Program
In Nevada, we partner with NBC affiliate KTNV-TV (Channel 13) to raise literacy awareness through the Sizzling Summer of Reading Program. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, SuperPawn donates $100 to Spread the Word Nevada for every day the Las Vegas temperature reaches 100 degrees or more. And we all know how hot summer can be in Las Vegas!

    Librarian of the Week Contest
SuperPawn hosts the Librarian of the Week Contest in recognition of National Library Week (April 8 – 14). A committee of SuperPawn coworkers selects four outstanding local school district librarians who display a superior commitment to knowledge and dedication. Winners receive a $1,000 award for school library enhancements and a piece of jewelry from our National Jewelry Liquidation Center.

Give the Gift of Reading Holiday Book Drive
SuperPawn has generously donated to holiday gift drives for more than a decade. Now, we sponsor the Give the Gift of Reading Holiday Book Drive each December. Customers who bring a new children’s book to any SuperPawn location during the month of December receive a discount off one SuperPawn purchase. The collected children's books are donated to Spread the Word Nevada.

We invite you to visit any SuperPawn location to learn more about us and our community outreach programs!

  • SuperPawn SuperHeroes to the Rescue!

By Caroline, Director of Community Relations

Do you know someone who is a “SuperHero” in their own right? Someone who gives back to the community and volunteers his or her time to help organizations? SuperPawn wants to recognize these special people!

Starting today, we’re launching a Facebook contest for residents in Arizona and Nevada called the SuperPawn SuperHeroes Contest. Nominees must be involved in community service and align with the SuperPawn mission statement: “We proudly support local nonprofit organizations dedicated to lifting lives and strengthening our community.”

The contest will run through July 1st, with three grand prize winners chosen. SuperPawn will ask the winning contestants to choose a charity that supports our five areas of charitable giving, which include: the military, families in need, financial literacy education, natural disaster relief and public safety initiatives. The charity must also be in good standing as a 501(c)(3) with the IRS.

Each grand prize winner’s charity of choice will receive a $1,000 donation from SuperPawn. The winner will present the check at a special SuperPawn luncheon that will include representatives from the nonprofit organization and members of the SuperPawn leadership team. The SuperHeroes will also receive a recognition plaque and a $250 Visa® gift card. Additionally, the person who nominated the winner will receive a $100 Visa® gift card.
Nominate someone in your community who is a SuperHero in their own right

You can find out more information about the SuperPawn SuperHeroes contest by visiting the SuperPawn Facebook page, or just click on the rules for more details.

  • "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?"

Cash America’s corporate headquarters opened in Fort Worth, Texas in 1983. While we moved our headquarters from the original building, we still remain in downtown Fort Worth today. Rich in culture, cowboys and cuisine, Fort Worth is the nation’s 16th largest city. It has the welcoming feel of a small town with all the amenities of a big city.

In Fort Worth, people wear boots year-round and there is a daily cattle stroll through the Stockyards. You can even line dance over to Billy Bob’s Texas, the world’s largest honky-tonk. Our city also offers a variety of cultural experiences - the Kimbell Art Museum and Bass Performance Hall are world-renowned, and the Fort Worth Zoo  is  one of the top-ranked zoos in the country.

Cash America has a large presence in the Dallas/Fort Worth area with our corporate headquarters and 44 stores located here.  In 2000, Mother Nature tried to test our tenacity when an F-3 tornado struck downtown Fort Worth and hit our corporate office, causing much damage to the building. Cash America prevailed and we came back stronger than ever when we reopened the new building in 2001. Even a tornado couldn’t keep us out of Fort Worth!

So, if you live here, stop into one of our stores. If not, come visit us here in Fort Worth soon!

  • Family Fun in Action!

How deep do your family ties run? At Cash America, ours run so deep that we’ve made “We Are Family” one of our company’s core values.

When it comes to family, there’s nothing like some good ‘ol friendly competition. Our corporate office hosted a Cash America Softball Tournament last year, which benefited the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Rivalry, fun and hard work were put into action at the inaugural event that concluded a five-week JDRF fundraising campaign. Our corporate office’s campaign complemented the nationwide sneaker sale effort in our stores and all together we raised more than $480,000 to help fund a cure for type 1 diabetes. The family teamwork displayed at the office each day came in handy on the playing field during the games. Anytime we can bond with our Cash America family for a good cause, we consider that a home run!

Cash America Executives Curtis Linscott, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Tom Bessant, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and Dan Feehan, President and Chief Executive Officer talk sports strategy during the JDRF Cash America Softball Tournament.

Since we value our Cash America family so much, we also know the importance of helping other families in our communities. Last year, our coworkers in Indiana teamed up to raise money and collected toys, canned goods and other household items for local families during the holidays. In Dallas/Fort Worth last Thanksgiving, about 25 coworkers and their family members delivered 91 meals and turkeys to families so they could enjoy a hot meal together. We’re always looking for new ways to help families in our communities.

And, of course, our customers are part of our family, too. Since you visit our stores so often, you’ve naturally become our friends, and we love learning more about you. Let us know about the fun things you’re planning with your family this spring!

  • Cash in on Your Tax Money at Cash America!

    By John, Market Manager

Haven’t filed your taxes yet? You have until April 17 this year! Since April 15 fell on a Sunday and Emancipation Day (a holiday observed in the District of Columbia) on Monday, that gave us all two extra days to file.

If you’re like me and have already filed, now you’re thinking about what to do with your tax refund money. The majority of us will probably pay down debts (the responsible thing to do), but if you’re debt free or have a little extra tax refund money left, you may choose to embark in some retail therapy. Visit your nearest Cash America to find the best deals on items like: jewelry, electronics, power tools, lawn equipment and even firearms. If you’re too busy to leave the house, you can visit our eBay auction site, too.

    Happy shopping!

  • Don’t Change that Channel!

    By Hector, Market Manager

An antique cannon from Magnum P.I., a larger than life character nicknamed “The Old Man” and a show backdrop near the heart of the Vegas strip?  Seems like everyone is talking about Pawn Stars! This second highest-rated reality show has me excited about a new light being shone on our industry.

For thousands of years, the pawn industry has remained a relied upon and trusted source, yet its reputation in modern times often depicted dark alleyways and comic book-like characters. Today’s pawnshops have settled into neighborhoods and have become trusted places to do business. And thanks to reality TV, captive audiences everywhere get to see firsthand how the pawn process works and its family-oriented culture.

The fascinating stories you see on the show are entertaining, but aren’t always a true depiction of what we see every day in our shops. But, they keep DVRs running and inspire people to find treasures. The show has featured unique items, including sports’ memorabilia and 50s-era collectors’ toys. Even George Stephanopoulos made a cameo appearance and scored a first edition of “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Ernest Hemingway. The expertise that goes into evaluating these sometimes museum-type pieces is incredible.

As the industry leader, people often ask us how we view Pawn Stars. In our opinion, it does a respectable job of displaying some of the core values that we pride in our own stores — a commitment to excellent customer service and a deep connection to communities. We welcome this fresh and fun take on our industry of trade, treasure and trust. So, regardless of its guilty-pleasure status, I’m staying tuned in!

  • Take Me Out to the Ballgame

    By Jeff Phillips, Operations Director

As a kid, there were many special events that I looked forward to each year. Birthdays, holidays and vacations were always memorable, but nothing quite topped my love of sports - particularly baseball. For me, the most exciting day of the year has always been opening day of Major League Baseball!

America’s national pastime seems to unite everyone as families and friends gather at ballparks across the nation to enjoy the warm weather and cheer for their favorite teams. After all, who doesn’t love a good hot dog?

The Texas Rangers have played in the World Series for the past two years, making baseball even more popular in Texas. We’ve seen many customers come in with wide-eyed kids who pass musical instruments and electronic equipment to scamper to the sporting goods area looking for baseball equipment.

April 4th is MLB’s Opening Day, and nothing will get you in the baseball spirit more than a new glove, bat or baseball. Visit one of our stores now to pick up the best gear.

Now, with that being said, let’s all get ready to “Play Ball!”

  • Rolling Out the Red Carpet

    By Stephanie, Market Manager

Hollywood’s finest walked the red carpet last night at the Oscars®, and wow, did they look good! Movie buffs from all over gathered at house parties to ooh and aah (okay—and critique) the Oscar fashions.  Commentary probably included, “What was Jennifer Lopez thinking wearing that gown?” And, “Boy, didn’t Brad Pitt’s suit look great?”

We can’t help but be fascinated by Hollywood celebrities, but how often does a really great, memorable movie actually come along? War Horse, The Descendants and Hugo ranked among the nominees for Best Picture, and many thought one of these would win. But, The Artist, the first back-and-white movie to win Best Picture since 1994 and the first silent film to win Best Picture since 1929, came away with the win on Sunday.

Some other past Oscar-winning favorites come to mind – Forrest Gump, A Beautiful Mind, Braveheart, Casablanca and so many more! We sell current DVDs in our stores, including Blu-ray movies, along with some of those old favorites that can be hard to find elsewhere. So, head to the Cash America near you with a list of your favorite movie titles, and maybe even pick up a DVD player or a TV while you’re there.

What did you think of last night’s Oscars, and what are some of your favorite Oscar-winning movies?

  • Cash America: Kansas City Style

    By Jason, Market Manager

Kansas City is the largest city in the state of Missouri and home to 11 Cash America stores.

If you’re not familiar with Kansas City, let me share with you a few historical highlights and local attractions. For starters, we’re nationally famous for our barbecue. In fact, one of our most well-known restaurants, Arthur Bryant’s, was called “the single best restaurant in the world” by renowned author Calvin Trillin.

We also have a rich jazz and blues culture. KC is often referred to as one of the most popular “cradles of jazz” for its role in the transition from big band music to improvisational Bebop in the 1930s.

And, of course, we have professional sports teams, museums and we were listed as a Top Budget Travel Destination for 2012 by Budget Travel magazine. So, check out Kansas City and, of course, Cash America, while you’re here.  You’re sure to find great food, great people and great deals!

Cash America has eight locations in Kansas City with additional stores in Independence, Gladstone and Raytown. And we were awarded a “Neighborhood Improvement Award” from the City for the remodeling efforts we’re making in our stores.

    Come and see KC!

  • Honoring Our Shining Stars!

    By Melissia, Market Manager

Cash America employees shine when it comes to our core value, “We Bring Honor to Our Team!” They set us apart on a daily basis by stepping up to the plate at work and in our communities. Many have shown the utmost integrity when it comes to working with law enforcement and nonprofit organizations. After all, what’s more honorable than making our communities better places to live?

Check out these great stories about some of our employees. We couldn’t be more proud of these honorable Cash Americans. We don’t usually brag, but they’re pretty great!

Heinrich Downes works in the Audit & Security Department at Cash America, and is also a police officer in Boyd, Texas. He coordinated a donation of cameras from Cash America and helped install monitoring devices in the police department, so that they could have a constant eye on police equipment.  Boyd Chief of Police Greg Arrington honored Heinrich with a “Resolution of Appreciation” certificate because of his efforts. Heinrich began working for Cash America in March 2011, and it didn’t take him long to bring honor the team!

Our Training Department also goes above and beyond to educate employees and lead training programs to help make us experts at our jobs. Already this year, they have won the 2012 “Learning! 100 Award” from Elearning! Media Group, that recognizes 100 top organizations for best-in-class learning and development programs. In 2010, they were awarded a gold medal for “Best Use of Video for Learning” by Brandon Hall Excellence in Learning. The award recognized YouDrive—a database housed on our intranet that includes more than 600 training and educational videos, images and wikis—all submitted by Cash America coworkers and accessible to all of us.

These are just a few of many examples that show our employees bringing honor. Let us know if you’ve had similar experiences with any of our employees!

  • Love Season: Now Opening!

Valentine’s Day marks a holiday of wedding proposals, new relationships, anniversaries and good old fashioned stomach-flipping butterflies. This flutter of lipstick, red hearts and chubby cupids does raise an interesting question: Why is it that women adore jewelry so much?

Jewelry provides a statement of personal expression, and maybe more importantly, it’s sentimental and women remember the occasion the pieces were given. Many women have stories about a certain piece of jewelry that their father or husband gave to them. They can gaze deeply into a gemstone and remember the birth of a first child or smile when an anniversary charm bracelet jingles on their wrist.

This Valentine’s Day, carve a memory in a loved one’s life by purchasing jewelry for her! We’re making it easier than ever to give big without a huge money sacrifice. All our jewelry is authenticated, and we offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, as well as layaway.

Oh, by the way, Happy Valentine’s Day!

    XOXOXOXO

  • Indianapolis Market: A Super Bowl-Worthy Year!

    By Matt, Market Manager

Our Cash America team in Indianapolis made 2011 a year to remember – a good preparation for the Super Bowl festivities taking place this weekend. We completed a huge undertaking by remodeling six stores, which included adding new floors and counters, better shelving and more windows. We opened a new store location in Indianapolis as well. All of these additions help us better serve our customers!

Along with the six remodels and a new store location, our coworkers also found time to make a difference in the Indianapolis community. We volunteered and raised money in our stores for the “Shop With a Cop” Event. After our store fundraising was complete, employees joined local police officers and took children to a holiday movie and then shopping for gifts.

To add to that, we worked with a local food bank that distributes food to the needy and another non-profit organization to help donate and distribute back-to-school supplies to children. While distributing the back-to-school items to families, we also handed out packets that included tips to reduce the chances of becoming victims of theft.

Our employees don’t have tickets for the Super Bowl in Indianapolis, but we have been selling more televisions as the game has drawn closer. Our Market Manager Joey, a Colts fan, likes to console himself by saying the “Colts are going, they’re just not playing.”

The Colts may not be in this week’s Super Bowl, but we think our Cash America team in Indianapolis is just SUPER!

  • 3 Easy Steps for Selling Your Jewelry

    By Chris, Operations Director

Selling unwanted and old (even broken) jewelry is an effortless way to increase your cash flow. It’s time to dust off your old jewelry box in search of items to sell. Do you really want that bracelet from your ex-boyfriend anyway?

When considering what to sell, search for items like out-of-style earrings, but also remember that things like broken pins and watches will pay off, too. By selling these old items, you’ll make room for new pieces that you’ll actually wear!

    1.    When you bring your pieces in, we’ll test for diamond or gem quality and metal content.
    2.    The authentication process includes a simple visual inspection, weighing and sizing.
    3.    We’ll then test the metal using a special acid (it’s harmless to your jewelry) that determines the karat of gold. This ensures there are no false readings that could detract from your total payout.

After the jewelry has been tested, we may clean the item for you.

Our price for gold is based on market value, which we review frequently. If you have any additional information about your jewelry, such as appraisals or other documentation, please bring it with you when you come to sell your jewelry. Once you’ve sold your jewelry, you may be able to pay off an unexpected bill or even get closer to that getaway you’ve needed!

What is currently cluttering your jewelry box?

  • Searching for Rare Gems

    By Russ, Market Manager

Do you ever begin shopping trips hoping to find rare, unique items, only to end up with the same ‘ol stuff you always see in stores? After all, who wants to have the same things as all of their friends, anyway?  We regularly carry rare items in our stores that can’t be found everywhere. Check out some of them, and this could be you talking:

Come check out some of our rare items!

“Tuesdays are always particularly gruesome at my work! They include four hours of back-to-back meetings followed by an afternoon of playing major catch-up. So now, every Tuesday at lunch, I venture out to my favorite Cash America for a midday retreat.

Each week, I set out to find unique items to purchase. This provides me some serious stress relief without stressing out my wallet. The really fun part about this shopping is—it has almost become like a game—I discover more rare finds in Cash America than if I were using my lunch break to search the Internet!

    Last Tuesday, in a half-hour I spotted:

    •    Designer handbags from Coach and Kenneth Cole

    •    Vintage music and box sets

    •    Estate jewelry (a gorgeous brooch I'm going to put on a chain

          and wear as a necklace)

    •    Rare art

    •    Instruments (guitar lessons are on my 2012 resolutions list)

I’m so glad I’ve discovered this lunchtime ritual. My Tuesday visits usually always end in a rare purchase.”

We also offer unique items for sale on our eBay auction site at eBay.com.

What kinds of unique items do you search for when you shop? Tell us about any cool, rare finds you have already purchased in our stores!
